The 2003 model year marked the first major revision for the second-generation Accent that was introduced in 2000. The sophisticated European look of the Accent was enhanced in 2003 with refinements and changes to the hood, front fenders, bumper, grille and headlamps. At the rear, the taillamps and rear deck were also revised to provide a sportier appearance. A major upgrade for the 2005 model year is availability of ABS on the Accent.
For 2005 the Accent is available in three configurations: Accent GLS 3-door, Accent GLS 4-door and Accent GT 3-door. All Accent models are powered by Hyundai's DOHC 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 104 horsepower.
The affordable Accent offers buyers a long list of standard equipment including the sophisticated DOHC 1.6-liter engine, four-wheel independent suspension, power steering, dual front airbags, side-impact airbags, dual remote mirrors, four-speaker AM/FM stereo/cassette sound system, full-folding rear seat, variable intermittent windshield wipers, electric window defroster with timer, remote fuel door and hood releases, center console with coin holder, storage box, cupholder and a handy cargo area lamp. Standard equipment also includes driver's seat with built-in folding armrest, tachometer, digital clock, rear window washer/wiper (3-door only), tinted glass and sunshade band, 60/40 split folding rear seat, and body-color door handles, mirrors and bodyside molding. The roomy Accent GLS 4-door is also fitted with a remote trunk release and child safety rear door locks as standard equipment.
Also available is Hyundai's Popular Equipment Package, the most-ordered option package for the Accent GLS and GT models. The appropriately named Popular Equipment Package includes power windows, power door locks, power mirrors and 6-speaker AM/FM/stereo/CD.
For buyers who crave a sportier model, the Accent GT 3-door is the answer. The GT is fitted with sport-tuned suspension, 14-inch alloy wheels with P185/60-14 tires, front fog lamps, body-color rocker panel moldings, and a handsome body-color rear spoiler.
Inside, the driver will find a whiteface instrument panel gauge cluster, leather- wrapped steering wheel and shift knob and sport cloth seats.

As with every vehicle Hyundai sells in the U.S., every Accent comes equipped with The Hyundai Advantage, America's Best Warranty, a package that reflects Hyundai's confidence in the quality of its products.
The Hyundai Advantage includes limited bumper-to-bumper coverage for five years or 60,000 miles, which exceeds the coverage on many cars costing more than twice as much. In addition, Accent buyers receive 24-hour roadside assistance coverage at no extra charge for five years (no mileage limit) and that service includes emergency towing, lockout service and limited coverage for trip-interruption expenses.
Hyundai also provides Accent buyers with industry-leading limited powertrain coverage -- 10 years or 100,000 miles -- and that coverage remains in effect when ownership of the car is transferred to other family members. Even if the car is sold, Hyundai backs Accent's powertrain for five years or 60,000 miles. Anti-perforation coverage is provided for five years or 100,000 miles. There is no deductible on any of these coverages.
Solid Structure
Using sophisticated design and process technology, Hyundai engineers have made the basic structure of the Accent strong and rigid. The reinforced A and B pillars are injected with structural foam to provide additional strength and reduced vibration, and the cowl cross bar is designed for strength to reduce steering wheel vibration. The doors are double sealed, minimizing wind noise,
and the floor panels are fitted with special vibration absorbing materials to further reduce noise
in the cabin.
Styling
Using a balanced combination of straight lines and edges, the Accent exudes an elegant, sophisticated look. The gently sloping hood and steeply raked windshield provide a subtle, striking appearance and aerodynamic efficiency. Distinctive character lines swoop inward toward the bold-looking grille. The large, clear halogen headlamps with wraparound turn signals are slanted rearward and add to the refined look of the front end.
The revised body-color front bumper incorporates a front air intake dam and the GT model features fog lamps located directly below the headlamps. The attractive grille and front air dam are designed to channel more cooling air into the radiator - coupling functionality with flair.
Viewed from the side, the Accent's strong shoulder line sweeps from front to rear. The unique roofline is higher near the front of the car, which provides more headroom for the driver, congruent with a sportier look.
The windshield is steeply raked and the A pillars are slim to provide increased visibility for the driver. The rear combination lamps are positioned at the far corners to accentuate the space and width of the Accent. The rear lights feature a distinctive European look.
Interior
The Accent's interior has been designed to provide generous headroom, legroom and hip room. The seats offer outstanding lumbar support and feature upgraded upholstery fabrics.
Special high-density foam pads are used in the seat cushions and seat backs for increased comfort on long drives. The driver's seat offers easy forward and backward adjustment as well as dual height adjustment, manipulated by two rotary knobs.
One knob controls the height of the forward position of the seat, and the second knob controls the height of the rear portion of the seat. In addition, the driver's seat in the Accent GL and GT models features a built-in, folding armrest.
For efficient use of cargo space and increased utility, the rear seat in the Accent folds down to create even more storage space, including a 60/40 split-folding feature.
The instrument panel has been designed and engineered with driver comfort and convenience in mind. The gauge pod includes large, easy-to-read gauges including tachometer, speedometer, odometer, trip odometer, fuel level gauge and coolant temperature gauge.
The center fascia contains the climate control system and the audio system, with air vents positioned on top. The audio system is located in the center and the soft-touch control buttons for the fan, air circulation and temperature are located just above the pop-out cupholders. The control knobs are large, easy-to-use rotary design. All materials used in the dashboard are made of environmentally friendly, recyclable material.
Engine and Transmission
All Accent models are equipped with Hyundai's smooth and sophisticated 1.6-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine. This highly reliable, low-maintenance engine is rated at 104 horsepower at 5,800 RPM and delivers 106 lb/ft of torque at a very usable 3,000 RPM.
A smooth-shifting five-speed manual transmission is standard on the Accent. Buyers can select an optional four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with lock-up torque converter.
A computer chip in the automatic transmission allows the transaxle to adapt to different driving situations. When necessary, the transmission can skip a downshift to reduce the number of shifts when decelerating.
The transmission's adaptive logic also can delay upshifts and reduce "hunting" when going uphill.
Suspension
With its advanced four-wheel independent suspension, Accent also offers more precise handling than most buyers expect to find in an entry-level car.
Accent's front suspension features MacPherson struts, offset coil springs and an anti-roll bar. The suspension geometry is designed to reduce nose lift while accelerating and reduce nosedive when braking. Front toe is precisely controlled to help provide a stable ride and excellent road holding capability. A front sub-frame helps reduce road noise and improve energy management in frontal collisions.
The rear suspension incorporates a dual link design with coil springs and anti-roll bar, which provides excellent ride quality and good handling.
All Accent models have a power-assisted dual-diagonal braking system with ventilated discs in front and self-adjusting drums in the rear. Power brakes are standard on all 2005 Accents and the 9-inch power brake booster provides solid brake pedal feel.
Power rack-and-pinion steering is standard on all Accent models. With a tight turning diameter, the Accent is a nimble performer. The rack-and-pinion steering system provides excellent road feel and handling capabilities.
Accent GLS models for 2005 are fitted with P175/70R-13 steel-belted, all-season radial tires mounted on 13-inch steel wheels with deluxe full wheel covers. The GT model sports 185/60R-14 tires mounted on 14-inch alloy wheels.
Comfort and Convenience

The Accent is also equipped with front seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, which are designed to tighten the seatbelt in the event of a collision.
